Kathleen Chavez’s Major Themes in Literature of the Southwest and
Meliza Ramirez’s Advanced Spanish Grammar and Composition classes
have collaborated on a unique project exploring stories of various people
living in the San Luis Valley and Southwest. Each student was tasked with
conducting a 20 to 50-minute interview with a community member with a
story to tell, whether it be a story passed down through their ancestors or
their own. The stories in this collection range from agriculture and
settlement to history and mysteries, to tall tales and folk stories to show how
the Southwest and its history affect its people and culture today. The stories,
author and interviewee biographies, and photos were compiled to bring this
book in print. Dr. Ramirez and her students, committed to increasing
accessibility of the stories, translated the biographies and stories into
Spanish. Also with aims at reaching our auditory audience, the students in
both classes created a website that will be home to the audiobook, with the
stories being narrated in both English and Spanish. The goal of everyone
who made this project a reality was to highlight the significance of these
stories and the people behind them, illustrating how even seemingly trivial
experiences can play a vital role in shaping individuals' cultures, lives, and
identities. Through this work, we hope to pay homage to the past while
preserving and appreciating the rich culture of the Southwest.
Los temas principales de la literatura del suroeste de Kathleen Chávez y las clases de gramática y composición española avanzada de Meliza Ramírez han colaborado en un proyecto único que explora las historias de diversas personas que viven en el Valle de San Luis y el suroeste. Cada estudiante tuvo la tarea de realizar una entrevista de 20 a 50 minutos con un miembro de la comunidad que tuviera una historia que contar, ya sea una historia transmitida de sus antepasados ​​o la suya propia. Las historias de esta colección abarcan desde la agricultura y los asentamientos hasta la historia y los misterios, pasando por cuentos fantásticos y cuentos populares, para mostrar cómo el suroeste y su historia influyen en su gente y cultura actuales.
